Christian Service

Bishop John J. Snyder High School is committed to the religious education of the whole person.  We believe that as a Catholic school, it is our unique mission to guide young people in developing a Christian social consciousness and a commitment to a life of justice and peace.

General Information

  • All students must complete a minimum of twenty-five hours of Christian service each year they attend Bishop John J. Snyder High School.
  • Each year the time frame for performing community service will be June 1st through May 1st.
  • We strongly suggest that students pace themselves by setting a personal goal of at least five hours over the summer and five hours per quarter.
  • Service hours will be adjusted on a sliding scale to accommodate transfer students; however, hours may not be rolled over from one year to the next.
  • Students are responsible for completely filling out and submitting a Record of Christian Service form to the Office of Campus Ministry as documentation of each completed service project.  Forms are available in the Office of Campus Ministry, in religion classrooms and by clicking here.
  • For service completed during the summer months, completed Record of Christian Service forms should be handed in to the Office of Campus Ministry when students return in August.

Academic Implications

  • Seniors must complete the minimum number of Christian service hours in order to participate in graduation exercises.
  • Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 must complete the minimum number of Christian service hours in order to be promoted at Bishop John J. Snyder High School.

Consequences Associated with Christian Service Hours

  • Students who do not satisfy the 25-hour requirement will receive an Incomplete in Religion until they complete the remaining hours on campus after final exams.  If they do not complete the hours immediately following the school year, students must use the summer to complete 2 hours for every hour they still owe.  If a student has not completed his/her service requirement by the first day of school the following year, the student will not be allowed to attend classes until the requirement is met.

    Pre-Approved Service Opportunities
While students are not limited to the opportunities listed at the above link, all service hours must be volunteer (non-paid) and completed after school hours.
