In
1999 the High School Task Force concluded that Jacksonville and
the surrounding area was in need of an additional Catholic high
school. The studies showed that west Jacksonville was the ideal
location. "The Opportunity of a Lifetime" capital campaign was
launched and people throughout the Diocese generously contributed
funds to build a new high school that would be dedicated to Bishop
John J. Snyder. Bishop John J. Snyder was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn in 1972. Pope John Paul II transferred him to the See of St. Augustine and he was installed as the eighth bishop of St. Augustine on December 5, 1979. As required by the Code of Canon Law, Bishop Snyder resigned on his 75th birthday, October 25, 2000. Bishop Snyder is a regular visitor here at the high school. He says Mass and has lunch with the students on a regular basis. His episcopal motto is "Peace in Christ". Bishop John J. Snyder High School opened its doors on August 14, 2002 to seventy-four ninth graders. |
