Our Founder
Bishop John J. Snyder was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn in 1972. Pope John Paul II transferred him to the See of St. Augustine and he was installed as the eighth bishop of St. Augustine on December 5, 1979. As required by the Code of Canon Law, Bishop Snyder resigned on his 75th birthday, October 25, 2000.
Our beloved namesake went home to the Lord on September 27, 2019. May he rest in peace.
Bishop Snyder was a regular visitor here at the high school. He celebrated Mass and enjoyed extra-curricular activities with the students on a regular basis. His Episcopal motto was “Peace in Christ”.
When asked if he ever wanted to be Pope, Bishop Snyder replied, “No, but I always wanted to be a Cardinal, but I couldn’t hit a curve ball.” Bishop Snyder’s love for the St. Louis Cardinals was strong, and he was a loyal fan of this ball club. Bishop Snyder personally chose the Cardinal as the mascot for Bishop John J. Snyder High School.
