National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is the leader among organizations that promote recognition of high school students who demonstrate outstanding accomplishment in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Throughout the school year, members of the Bishop John J. Snyder Chapter of National Honor Society participate in monthly meetings, academic gatherings, and service to the school and community.
At the beginning of the school year, juniors and seniors who have a cumulative, weighted GPA of at least 3.75 are invited to apply for membership. Each candidate will complete and submit a Student Activity Form for review by the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council then submits recommendations to the principal for final approval.
A 3.75 GPA must be maintained through graduation. If a member’s GPA falls below 3.75, the member will be placed on probation. A senior member whose GPA is below 3.75 at the end of the final quarter will not receive NHS designation at Senior Awards or at graduation.
Spanish Honor Society
Our chapter of the Spanish Honor Society, Father Felix Varela, was introduced to Bishop John J. Snyder High School in 2006. The members of our society are students of exceptional qualities. They take on various leadership roles, are dedicated to their studies, and have a love for the Spanish culture.
Acceptance into the society is based on the following criteria:
- Students must maintain an honor average in the study of Spanish for at least three semesters.
- Also, they must have character, cooperation, honesty, service and commitment for others.
There will be an induction ceremony held at school. Parents, administrators and candidates are invited to attend.
Parts of their responsibilities are to tutor students that are in need of assistance. The sponsor will choose the candidate the student will help and how frequently he/she will spend time tutoring.

French National Honor Society – Société Honoraire de Français
It is an honor to be a member of the French National Honor Society at Bishop John J. Snyder High School. This is in part due to the high academic standards and dedicated service of those who are considered for the induction ceremony into the organization. For consideration into the Société Honoraire de Français, students must be enrolled in a French Class beyond the second year level at the time of selection. Candidates must have and maintain a 3.5 GPA or above in French and have the recommendation of the French teacher while maintaining the strict academic standards.
Students who are currently enrolled in an honors level math course Geometry or higher and who have an overall weighted GPA of at least 3.5 and overall weighted math GPA of at least 4.0 may be invited to participate in Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honors fraternity.
The society boasts 105,000 members spread across over 2100 schools nationwide and including some international schools. Members participate in nationwide mathematics competitions throughout the year (students compete at BJS and scores are entered electronically), may attend the national convention, complete services hours through peer tutoring, may intern for mathematical research positions, and are eligible for scholarships. Some Bishop Snyder Students have already received recognition for their entries in the “Mathematical Minutes” video contest as well as their scores and placement in the “Log 1” competitions.
We are thrilled to be able to offer these experiences and recognitions to our Bishop Snyder Students.
